Herpes Symptoms - Herpes Simplex Type 2 Symptoms HSV-2

Herpes 2 Symptoms

- The second type of Herpes virus is known as HSV-2, or Herpes Simplex Virus type 2. Type two herpes is the type that usually causes genital herpes.

- Infection of HSV-2 is more common in women (1 in 4) than in men (1 in 5).

- According to ASHA, infected people usually experience 4-5 outbreaks of genital herpes per year, with each outbreak decreasing in severity.

- Genital Herpes cannot be cured. Although, medication will decrease the frequency and severity of outbreaks.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 45 million people aged from 12 and up in the USA have been infected with genital herpes virus. That equals one out of five adolescents and adults.

More Herpes Facts

- National trend data on the seroprevalence of HSV-2 among those aged 14 to 49 years from the NHANES survey years 1999-2004 were compared with survey years 1988-1994.

- Seroprevelance has decreased from 21% in 1988-1994 to 17.0% in 1999-2004.

- After including data on African Americans and caucasians from NHANES survey, years 1976-1980, African Americans had higher seroprevalence than caucasians for each survey period and age group.
In 1999-2004, the overall percentage of survey participants who reported having been diagnosed with genital herpes was 3.8%.7

- In between the latter part of the 1970s and the early 1990s, the number of Americans that became infected increased by 30%. This percentage has significantly declined from the 90’s through 2004.

HSV-2 seroprevalence is reportedly decreasing, yet most people that are infected with HSV-2 have not even been diagnosed. Increased recognition of infection will increase as soon as a permanent treatment is created.

Herpes Simplex Type 1 Symptoms and Statistics HSV-1

Herpes Symptoms and Statistics

- There are two different types of the herpes virus. HSV-1, or Herpes Simplex Virus type 1, is the type of Herpes that usually causes facial herpes or cold sores on the lips. An affected person with an HSV-1 affected area will create small blisters or sores on either the face, mouth (cold sores or fever blisters) or genitals.

- Genital contraction of HSV-1 is rare, but still tends to happen. Typically, the first outbreak is the most severe and can take up to a month dry up and scab over. The major reason for Herpes being so destructive is that between 10% and 30% of carriers are asymptomatic. Asymptomatic is referred to as the lack of signs of the disease even though one is infected. They may still spread herpes during the shedding of the skin. Herpes can become fatal in newborns and people who have acquired HIV.

Herpes Symptoms and HSV1 Symptoms

- Many carriers HSV-1 are asymptomatic or show no symptoms of infection.

- Asymptomatic shedding, also known as the time period in which the infected area of the skin sheds, may occur in 2-9% of adults and 5-8% of children.

- Sunlight, fever, local skin trauma, stress, and menstruation are the cardinal factors in resulting outbreaks.

- By 50 years of age, 80%-90% of us harbor HSV-1, because we have caught it from someone close to us.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that just under 90 percent of the U.S. population has been exposed to the herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), and over 25 percent of the population ages 25 to 45 have been exposed to herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) disease.
